In my new classroom I have been faced with some major challenges:
- The walls are made of a type of brick that staples and pushpins will not go through, and which nothing sticks to.
- To make matters worse, one entire wall of my classroom is windows and a door.
- Three small bulletin boards have been put up. However, with 30+ students each year those small boards are barely enough, and I am limited in what I can display.
These obstacles have forced me to have to get creative. I decided that for the upcoming school year I will have 2 clothes lines across the line of windows in my room. I thought this would be a great way to utilize that space {without getting in trouble for sticking things to the windows that don't come off}. Then, I stumbled upon chalkboard clothespins on pinterest. Click here to view. I decided to create some of my own:
These will be the final touch to making my clothesline display come to life. During the first days of school I will have my students use chalk to write their names on their clothes pins. Then, at the end of the year, I can erase them and save them for the next. Here's a close-up sample that I made for my daughter:

Precious!!! I love a black background...your clothespins just "pop" behind the chalkboard!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is so darn cute, plus it makes a boring bulliten board pop and look awesome while displaying so great work. I love it. Could you use scrapbook chipbaord?

This is adorable! Where did you find the colored clothes pins?
ReplyDeleteThose are so cute! :) I have similar brick walls and the only thing that sticks is blue ticky tack and a lot packing tape. Maybe those will work for you as well....
ReplyDeleteif you are allowed to hang on cinder block...hot glue works and peels off nicely!
ReplyDeleteThese are so fantastically wonderful. I assume you've already thought of this, but just in case you hadn't (and before you go through the hassle of stringing the line)...
ReplyDeleteare you sure they won't set off any alarms?
I found out the hard way (translation: principal having to come to school in her PJs, that some hanging things trigger the alarm in the night.
I also LOVED my portable days.

Your clothespin chalkboards came out looking beautiful! Have you tried using the Command poster strips for hanging things on your cinder blocks? I have been using them for a couple years now and my problems with things falling off the walls have disappeared. They also make hooks, handy for hanging clotheslines from. :)

Super! I have a full wall of glass blocks-so your idea of a clothes line sounds great! I may use a large paper punch and card stock for labels. I'm wondering if there are small craft clothes pins that are colored.

LOVE IT!!! I also have the horrible cement walls... I tried to drive a nail through the other day and bent the head :( I resorted to hot glue today. Hope I don't make anyone mad :)
ReplyDeleteI love these clothespins!!! Thanks for sharing your great idea!

Those are so cute! I love making/using things that are usable for more than one year in my classroom.
ReplyDeleteI have also used hot glue on cinder block. It sticks well and is fairly easy to remove at the end of the year.
Thanks everyone for all the wonderful comments. To answer some of your questions:
ReplyDeleteLauren- I think that scrapbook chipboard should work.
Mrs. Foreman- I painted the clothespins to match the colors I'm using in my classroom.
Thanks also for all the wonderful suggestions in dealing with my brick walls. Sadly, packing tape and blue sticky stuff didn't work last year. I'm going to try command poster strips this year, and maybe the glue gun {but, you didn't hear me say that ;)}
Super cute idea! Thanks for sharing!

Those are so awesome! I have a book recommendation for you- The Wednesday Wars. I read it and really liked it. It was interesting to read a kid's perspective on the things his teacher asked of him.
ReplyDeleteADORABLE! My kids' coats and backpacks go in cubbies that line out hallway. I know how I am labeling them this year! Thanks much!
